build a house

Last year, one of my amazing friends sent me this song. At the time, it probably didn’t seem like much, just a text and a song, but I know without a doubt that my sweet friend was following divine intuition, a little nudge to serve someone in need. God knew I needed this song, so He found a messenger to send it to me.

This song has become a kind of anthem for me this year, a much-needed reminder that I’m experiencing a season of transition, a season of growth and change and rebuilding.

Today, I wanted to share these lyrics with you (and I highly recommend that you go listen to the whole beautiful song) because maybe you’re building too. Maybe you need the reminder that good things take time. I could say more, but I think the song will say it better.

So here you go, my friends. Let Him build with you.

“Build A House” by Megan Tibbits

I'm building
But the walls they take forever
I guess I painted over wallpaper instead of scraping it off

I'm filling
Guess I thought it would be easier
To cover up holes by hanging pretty things on the wall

I had to do a little bit of undoing to do it right
I had to do a little bit of unlearning to see the light

I want to build a house
That's sturdy and unshaken
But first I gotta tear down
What I thought that I could make it
'Cause the walls could no longer hold
The weight of all you want to put inside
So I gotta tear it down
'Cause I want to build a house

I'm learning
That I thought I knew the best way
You probably tried to tell me gently
But still I demanded I was right

I notice
That I know less than I did before
But you think that is beautiful
And you've been waiting for that

I had to do a little bit of undoing to do it right
I had to do a little bit of unlearning to see the light

I want to build a house that's sturdy and unshaken
But first I gotta tear down what I have tried to make it
'Cause the walls could no longer hold
The weight of all you want to put inside
So I gotta tear it down
'Cause I want to build a house

A place where you want to live
A place where you want to stay
A place where I stop taking up all the space and
A place where you can move
A place you can redecorate
A place where I've addressed the things that need to change and
A place that you can use
A place where you will say
Well done now
You've built me a house

I want to build a house
That's sturdy and undaunted
But first I gotta tear down what I thought that I had wanted
'Cause the walls could no longer hold
The weight of all you want to put inside
So I gotta tear it down
'Cause I want to build a house
